Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any prominent honors show draws close, you'll find a clamor for the addition additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
